There is a reason these guys are the number one guesthouse in Lisbon and I\u2019m delighted to add my voice to the laudatory chorus. They manage their transient guests with good humor and skill, arranging a tour here, dealing with airlines there, offering dining and shopping suggestions tailored to individual tastes, with no pressure. They encourage the timid and marvel at the adventures of the bold. Total pros.<\/p>\n<p>Headed out, overjoyed to be going downhill. If I had to pick one word for the topography of this town it would be <em>steep<\/em>. I saw a plain gray stone church, and, on a whim, pushed open the door. The interior was painted Tiffany blue and white. Intricate versions of The Stations of the Cross marched around the periphery, made of classic blue and white painted Portuguese tile.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blue-church11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-779 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blue-church11-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"blue church1\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blue-church11-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blue-church11.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>The ceiling was elaborately painted, with the Holy Spirit as a dove in the center in a nimbus of yellow light.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dove.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dove.jpg\" alt=\"dove\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dove.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/dove-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a> Three people came in at different times while I was poking around. They dropped a coin in the poor box, prayed in front of one of the altars, and left for work. I was respectful and discreet, and they paid no attention to me. It was lovely to see the ritual part of spiritual in daily life. I lit a candle for a departed friend and pushed on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/candle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-780\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/candle.jpg\" alt=\"candle\" width=\"400\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/candle.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/candle-272x300.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>I stopped in a park with an overlook and took a moment to stop and gaze at the city spread out before me. As I turned to go, a man playing guitar for passersby picked out the opening to <em>Stairway to Heaven<\/em>. I put two euros in his cap.<\/p>\n<p>My next stop was the Museum of Sacred Art, adjacent to the <strong>Sao Roque Church<\/strong>. There was blindingly intricate lace for priest\u2019s cuffs, gold embroidered vestments,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_3810.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-787\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_3810-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3810\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_3810-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_3810.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>ornate silver gilt candle sticks, painted wood statues,\u00a0 &#8211; my favorite was the Pious Pelican,<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_3828.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_3828-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_3828\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_3828-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_3828-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_3828.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>and variations on saints, martyrs, virgins and one particularly dissipated looking cherub.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/disipated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-782\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/disipated-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"disipated\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/disipated-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/disipated.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>And\u00a0 the man himself, St Roch. I don&#8217;t know why I love that hat on the skull, but I do.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/st-roche.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-790\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/st-roche.jpg\" alt=\"st roche\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was absorbed and fell into my observation zone. It\u2019s very meditative and I lose track of time.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, I thought I\u2019d take a quick look at the church. Holy cow. You know when a flash bulb goes off in your face? Probably not, unless you are over forty, but I digress. The point is you are temporarily blinded by the light. Well, that\u2019s what this was like. Plain as a paper bag on the outside, beyond gaudy by everything baroque could throw at you on the inside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gold-chapel1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-783\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gold-chapel1.jpg\" alt=\"gold chapel1\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gold-chapel1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gold-chapel1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gold-chapel1-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a> There\u2019s a poem by John Keats, <em>On First Looking into Chapman&#8217;s Homer<\/em>, that sprang to mind. No, really. It starts out,<\/p>\n<p><em>Much have I traveled in the realms of gold,<br \/>\nAnd many goodly states and kingdoms seen;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>and ends this way &#8211;<\/p>\n<p><em>Then felt I like some watcher of the skies<br \/>\nWhen a new planet swims into his ken;<br \/>\nOr like stout Cort\u00e9s when with eagle eyes<br \/>\nHe stared at the Pacific -and all his men<br \/>\nLooked at each other with a wild surmise &#8211;<br \/>\nSilent, upon a peak in Darien.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps it was <em>\u2018realms of gold\u2019<\/em> since I was swimming in the stuff. Or the conquistador reference,\u00a0 that\u2019s where a chunk of the loot to finance this came from. Or the fabulous phrase,<em> \u2018wild surmise.\u2019<\/em> I think the whites of my eyes were showing. I stared, stupefied by the sheer level of in-your-face.<\/p>\n<p>This Jesuit church is awash in gold.They went all in, and then they threw in some more. <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-785\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gold-chapel2.jpg\" alt=\"gold chapel2\" width=\"600\" height=\"823\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gold-chapel2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/gold-chapel2-218x300.jpg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were glazed tiles, gilt woodwork, marble, carving, silver gilt, multicolored painted figures, and oil paintings galore. One chapel featured what looked like a couple of thousand cherubs. The interior was\u00a0 a visual assault, a body slam of gleam and dazzle. It made excessive seem like it\u2019s just not trying hard enough.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-784\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/rock-gold.jpg\" alt=\"rock gold\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/rock-gold.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/rock-gold-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of the earliest Jesuit churches, built in the 16th century.<\/p>\n<p>Fun fact &#8211; The most notorious of the several baroque is the 18th-century Chapel of St. John the Baptist (Capela de S\u00e3o Jo\u00e3o Baptista). That built this bad boy in Rome, then disassembled, shipped, and reconstructed it in S\u00e3o Roque. At the time it was the most expensive chapel in Europe. Apparently, God loved it, because this church was unharmed by the infamous earthquake\/flood\/fire disaster of 1755.<\/p>\n<p>I lit a candle for my family and then my time was up \u2013 I had a lunch reservation at 12:30.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/candle2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-786\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/candle2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"candle2\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/candle2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/candle2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>I reluctantly pried myself away, and stumbled the few blocks to Belcanto, hoping the service would be as welcoming as the food was inventive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bela Lisboa, April 21\u00a0\u00a0 &#8211;\u00a0 In two parts. \u00a0Part One Enjoyed a varied and tasty breakfast in the walled garden of my B&amp;B Casa Amora.\u00a0\u00a0www.casaamora.com\/\u00a0 TripAdvisor has never steered me wrong.
