I layer up in a long sleeve tee, black Zella hoodie, Marmot raincoat, jeans, heavy socks, and mittens. I&#8217;m good to go. My family has convinced me of the Norwegian adage <em>Der findes intet der hedder d\u00e5rligt vejr, kun d\u00e5rligt p\u00e5kl\u00e6dning<\/em>. &#8216;There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong gear.&#8217; Thinking of flagging a taxi, but the rain is just mizzling, so I trotted down my favorite street to le <strong>Bon Bon<\/strong>. This time, I sat down in the tiny, toasty interior for my caf\u00e9 and croissant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bon-bon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-606\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bon-bon-300x282.jpg\" alt=\"bon bon\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bon-bon-300x282.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/bon-bon.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>From there it was off to the <strong>Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum<\/strong>,\u00a0 <a title=\"Thyssen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.museothyssen.org\/en\/thyssen\/home\">http:\/\/www.museothyssen.org\/en\/thyssen\/home<\/a> \u00a0I hoped the nasty weather would discourage crowds, but there were throngs of grammar school children. Luckily, they were short and I could easily see over their heads<\/p>\n<p>I galloped upstairs to view the works of my people, the Flemish and Dutch. Lovely lovely stuff, especially the portraits. To look at the famous portrait of <span class=\"irc_su\" dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\">King Henry VIII (by Hans Holbein in 1536)<\/span> is to wonder how he managed to invest\u00a0 features marred by greed with firmness and resolve. And it\u2019s very small, another surprise of scale.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/henryholbein1536.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-607\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/henryholbein1536-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"henryholbein1536\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/henryholbein1536-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/henryholbein1536.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a> For my artist friends, here&#8217;s a particularly wonderful example of pentimento \u2013\u00a0 the platter&#8217;s highlighted edge clearly visible through ghostly fruit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/pentimento.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/pentimento-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"pentimento\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/pentimento-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/pentimento.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>What you can&#8217;t see in this slightly unfocused detail of a portrait, is the way the painter scraped the blue paint back to the weave of the canvas to make the fabric&#8217;s texture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blue-fabric.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-613\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blue-fabric-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"blue fabric\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blue-fabric-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blue-fabric.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blue-fabric-624x831.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>It was a shock, but a pleasant one,\u00a0 to see several rooms of American artists. Here they take on a shine they don\u2019t get at home. To see my compatriots honored in this way gave me a little shiver of pride. I spotted a lovely Innes,<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/innes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-609\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/innes-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"innes\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/innes-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/innes-624x407.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/innes.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>and Hugh Jones&#8217; <em>Summer in of the Blue Ridge<\/em>\u00a0 gave me a surge of homesickness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blueridge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-610\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blueridge-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"blueridge\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blueridge-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blueridge-624x330.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/blueridge.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>A genre scene of maple sugaring reminded me of my sister Sarah, who was boiling down sap up in Wisconsin last month.\u00a0 William Bradford&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Fishermen off the Coast of Labrador<\/em> drew visitors like a blue magnet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_29081.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-615\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_29081-300x174.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2908\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_29081-300x174.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_29081.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> Gilbert Stuart&#8217;s\u00a0 portrait of George Washington was echoed, and to my mind eclipsed, by the dignity and warmth of his portrait of Washington&#8217;s cook. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/cook.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-612\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/cook-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"cook\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/cook-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/cook.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>I was going to forage for my lunch back out in the streets, but took a chance on the museum caf\u00e9. Score! Cheeseburger with bacon, medium rare, and thick cut French fries. Yum. As much as I enjoy gorging myself on pastry and ham, I have actually missed nutrition. Followed it up with an espresso, or I would have taken a siesta right there.<\/p>\n<p>Restored, I went back to view\u00a0 another floor and a half. As it turned out, I moved much more briskly through the halls of impressionists and 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>Left around 4pm and took a taxi to the opticians. Tried on dozens before I settled on a pair of hybrid black and tortoise shell frames, designed in Paris. But of course! The frames I bought in Paris last year were designed in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2966-copy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-614\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2966-copy-300x135.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_2966 copy\" width=\"300\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2966-copy-300x135.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/IMG_2966-copy.jpg 618w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>These frames weren&#8217;t cheap but they so delight me that they were well worth the cost. However, the price they quoted for the lenses was shocking \u2013 and that was before they said it was for each lens. Now, that\u2019s just appalling. No one buys a single lens. It borders on deceptive practice. I still bought the frames, but I&#8217;ll\u00a0 get the prescription filled back home. I may be a tourist and I am certainly vain but I am not an idiot.<\/p>\n<p>Strolled back to the apartment, picking up a brace of apples here, a fresh pan peque\u00f1o there. Hoping to have another whole night of sleep. What a difference it makes!
