Break at 5pm for dinner, then hurry back to roam the hallowed halls until 9 at night.\u00a0It\u2019s going to be a long day.<\/p>\n<p>Double\u00a0B coffee was having a blind tasting of beans. An\u00a0educational and competitive event for whatever the coffee bean equivalent of sommelier is, I guess. Two hours later\u2026 \u00a0<\/em>Today<em>\u00a0<\/em>I was going to the hunting dog room, when I saw a small\u00a0painting with\u00a0this pair of hounds.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dog-sketch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1367 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dog-sketch.jpg\" alt=\"{&quot;focusMode&quot;:0,&quot;deviceTilt&quot;:\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dog-sketch.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/dog-sketch-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had to\u00a0stop and draw them. Did them together and separately. A\u00a0passing tourist took a photo of me that serendipitously included the guard who kept a sharp but benevolent eye on me. It&#8217;s my favorite.<\/p>\n<p>After lunch I ventured to the Dutch and Flemish rooms. Oh my, Rubens. I turned a corner and blinked. It was like he suddenly turned on the lights. Everything from the rooms before receded, becoming flat and dim in memory. His work looked supercharged with life, vivid and bright. Not just his luscious woman, either. I already knew he had an\u00a0unmatched grasp of the pleasure of carnality. This small portrait of fierce old man\u2019s face stopped me in my tracks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1376\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1376\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/rubens.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1376 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/rubens.jpg\" alt=\"Bam!\" width=\"500\" height=\"605\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/rubens.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/rubens-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1376\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bam!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It was dark-thirty by the time I walked through the Rembrandt gallery. Rubens is hunger and appetite; he exults.<\/p>\n<p>Rembrandt aches.<\/p>\n<p>He didn&#8217;t flinch from the dark. His darkness wasn&#8217;t a featureless void, it was a deep well that he could dip into and draw out\u00a0compassion and empathy. \u00a0<em>&#8220;He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster.\u00a0And if thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee.&#8221; &#8211; Nietzsche. **<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I got to spend a good quarter of an hour essentially alone with\u00a0his <em>Prodigal Son<\/em>, a theme that resonates through my own life. Rembrandt understands the shame of degradation, the benediction of touch, the unexpected, undeserved, and unconditional welcome home.<\/p>\n<p>His painting is forgiveness made visible.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1374\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1374\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/prodigal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1374\" src=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/prodigal.jpg\" alt=\"Yearning for home.\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/prodigal.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.virginiaparker.net\/travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/prodigal-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yearning for home.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>**When I was checking the exact wording of the Nietzsche\u00a0quote, I came across this interesting \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quora.com\/What-did-Nietzsche-mean-when-he-said-if-you-stare-into-the-abyss-the-abyss-stares-back-at-you\">link about that very question.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a brief excerpt. &#8220;&#8230;People are losing their souls. Sex and Money are the draw. Emptiness the motivator. The hole of the abyss is filled with them, not what they were after. Addicts always start out with a view they can tempt the abyss and not be caught.
